setting a good example

Today I got a package from my aunt/godmother ML. Included were a nightgown I'd left at her house after a sleepover my cousins and I had there the last night of my New England trip in July, and a box of these:

During our growing up years, my mother was a smart shopper and often purchased store brand items to save on the grocery bill. Despite what Timon tries to tell people, we were NOT raised on sweets, but one treat Mom let us enjoy were "vanilla wafers." That's right, not Nilla Wafers, but "vanilla wafers." My wonderful aunt/godmother always felt sorry for us, because in actual fact, "vanilla wafers" are not the same thing as Nilla Wafers. Most of the time, store brand items are perfectly fine substitutes for the real thing. (Some other examples of things that fall short in the store brand variety are: toilet paper, cheerios, and shampoo/conditioner.) During my college years, ML used to sent me the occasional care package which invariably contained a box of Nilla Wafers. I was so happy today to see the box in my package.

This is just more inspiration for me to try harder at being a more thoughtful godmother to my godsons. I was chosen to be Zachary's godmother (he's my favorite nephew) and I am honored to serve. Zachary is an awesome guy and we had a great time at the beach together while I was visiting. I really wish we had more time together!

And I adopted Jack as a godson the summer Timon and I were married. Jack and his brother Ben are pretty spectacular human beings. We didn't get to spend much time together growing up, but over the past few years due to family events we've gotten closer. Jack (who really prefers that people call him JP) is getting ready to move to Spain with the two others in his jazz trio to be citizens of the world, treating Spain to their Solid Gold jazz music. Ben's pretty much a math genius and he is also a highly-skilled dancer. Jack's on the left, Ben on the right in this photo.

All this to say - A, get ready. You've got big shoes to fill - your mom is the best of the best. I'm sure you'll be the most wonderful godmother ever to Bertha.

Auntie M was good not only for the Nilla wafers, but also freezer pops, Five Alive, fluffernutter sandwiches, and other assorted goodies that aren't quite junk food! My only complaint was the extra hard hair brushing after nap time!!! Yay for great aunties and uncles :)

Mighty good looking young men. Auntie ML rocks. Cookies are the tip of the iceberg.
