Dear Henry Carmine,
Today you are three years old. But, it's the 4th May 12th that we have spent in your presence. Believe me, May 12, 2004, I definitely felt your presence as I lay in that hospital bed, having all those contractions and boy howdy - when that epidural wore off for the third time at about 6pm, your presence was ALL I could focus on. That May 12th, just 3 days after Mother's Day, you entered the outside world at 7:37pm with a holler and a one-eyed pirate stare, covered in vernix, with those gorgeous red lips you kissed me (and your horse balloon) with today.
Your first birthday was pretty low-key - we took you to get your first haircut, you had a little cupcake party at your daycare provider Myra's, you had a little ice cream cake with Nana and Papa and some manatees at a nice park by an inlet on the bay. Last year, for your second birthday you again had a little cake with Myra and your friends, but then we had a big party at the house with about 40 of your closest friends. You scowled through the entire thing, even when you had a candle to blow out on a yummy doughnut and during presents.
But this year, oh wow! You woke up happy this morning - we let you watch 2 episodes of Little Einsteins and eat a special bowl of Little Einsteins cereal. Only for birthdays do we buy that stuff! On the first episode, the kids were helping a "music car" named Carmine to win a race. How apropos! You were so excited to have a cowboy party - you had your hat and western shirt on, and a sheriff's badge proclaiming "I'm 3!", and your friends came over to eat fruit and cake shaped like a boot. You opened your presents of Silly Putty, a Bubble machine, Cars pajamas, an ABC puzzle and other stuff. You blew out your candle like a champ and even waited for us to finish singing "Happy Birthday To You!". You are so very polite.
Here are some words I could use to describe you, my son: clever, intelligent, hilarious, gorgeous, goofy, brave, sweet, obedient, helpful, imaginative, tall, all-boy, instinctive, coordinated, and funny. Those are but a few adjectives I could think of at the moment. I'm sure there are plenty more complimentary words I could toss in there given the time, and a thesaurus. I love the way you talk, and smile. I love the way you dance. I love hearing you tell me what you learned about Jesus in Sunday School. I love how much fun you have in your life. I love seeing you come home from school, eager to shed your backpack and give me a hug. I love hearing you sing, and watching you learning to swim. I'm so happy to have your birthday and Mother's Day so close together. It fits. My cup runneth over.
Love,
Mommy
